Your Pipeline Is Only as Good as Your Data

Garbage in, garbage out. Clean data isn't optional when AI agents run your outreach.

Your Pipeline Is Only as Good as Your Data

There's a saying in data engineering: garbage in, garbage out. It's never been more true than when AI agents are running your revenue operations. A bad model with clean data will outperform a good model with dirty data almost every time.

What Bad Data Looks Like in Practice

A contact that left a company 18 months ago but is still listed as the decision-maker. A company that was acquired but still appears as an independent entity. A firmographic profile that reflects the company's size in 2022, not today.

When an AI agent uses this data to prioritize outreach, it surfaces the wrong accounts, triggers outreach to unreachable contacts, and produces scoring that your reps learn not to trust. Once trust is lost, the system gets bypassed — and you've built expensive infrastructure that nobody uses.

The Decay Problem

B2B data decays fast. Industry estimates suggest that contact data decays at roughly 30% per year. Job changes, company restructurings, acquisitions, pivots — the landscape is constantly shifting.

This means your data pipeline isn't a one-time enrichment job. It's an ongoing process. Data that was accurate six months ago needs to be validated and refreshed continuously.

Building for Data Quality

The most effective approach treats data quality as infrastructure, not cleanup. That means:

Validation at ingestion: Don't write data to your system without validating it. Email format checks, domain verification, employment status signals — catch problems at the source.

Continuous enrichment: Build pipelines that periodically re-enrich your most important accounts with fresh data. Focus enrichment cycles on active pipeline and high-ICP accounts first.

Confidence scoring: Not all data is equally reliable. A LinkedIn-confirmed job title from last week is more reliable than a web scrape from a year ago. Surface confidence alongside data so agents (and reps) can weight it appropriately.

Audit trails: Know where every piece of data came from and when it was last validated. When something goes wrong — and it will — you need to trace the root cause quickly.

The Payoff

Teams that invest in data quality infrastructure consistently see better agent performance, higher reply rates, and more rep trust in automated systems. Clean data compounds — every downstream system benefits.

It's not glamorous work. But it's the foundation everything else runs on.
